English: Extracted from a postcard image. LNER No. 4470 Great Northern rebuilt by Edward Thompson. It was the prototype of the LNER Class A1 which received a new boiler, a new valve gear for the center cylinder and a rearrangement of the front end to accommodate connecting rods of the same length for all three cylinders. The rebuilt was completed in September 1945. Since the locomotive is shown with the number 4470, the image must have been taken before 1946, when it was renumbered to 113. The rebuild included fitting of a new valve gear and relocation of the cylinders, but it was met with criticism regarding its design. The postcard features the LNER No. 4470 Great Northern, the prototype for the LNER Class A1, which was rebuilt by Edward Thompson in 1945 to the one and only class A1/1 locomotive. It underwent significant modifications, including the installation of a new boiler, a new valve gear for the center cylinder, and a rearrangement of the front end to accommodate connecting rods of the same length for all three cylinders. Since the locomotive is depicted with the number 4470, the image must have been taken before 1946, when it was renumbered to 113.
