BeschreibungLewis and Clark, Teton Council Site.jpg
Our next stop was along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, which begins in Washington D.C. and zigzags along the eastern seaboard encompassing the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; then proceeds through Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. The Trail then meanders through the great plains of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and continues through the mountains and the valleys of Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, concluding at the Pacific Ocean. This photo is from LaFramboise Island, also known as "Bad Humor Island", in Pierre, South Dakota. A railroad bridge connecting Pierre with Fort Pierre is seen in the distance. The Missouri River also provides the boundary between central and mountain time zones in this area.
Lewis and Clark held a council here with the Teton Sioux on September 25, 1804, at the mouth of the Bad River. Later in the day and again two days later, hostile actions of the Teton warriors created confrontations that nearly came to armed conflict.
An interesting excerpt from the Corps of Discovery's journal about this location: "raised a Flag Staff & made a orning or shade on a Sand bar in the mouth of Teton River, for the purpose of Speeking with the Indians... we feel much at loss for the want of an interpreter the one we have can Speek but little ... met in Council ... envited those Cheifs on board to Show them our boat; soon began to be troublesom... Proceeded on about 1 mile & anchored out off a Willow Island, I call this Island bad humered Island as we were in a bad humer." Captain Clark
