Kythraea and Nicosia. there was no steam or visible vapour of anykind, it did not extinguish a Hghted match, andone could breathe it with impunity. We couldnot find out either in Kythraea or Nicosia anyone who knew anything of this vent, so wemay have possibly been the first to discoverit, as it was quite out of the way of shepherds,and Pentedactylon has not yet seen its slopesworn by the feet of many climbers. A friend of mine who went up again to thisarrete some eighteen months later told methat, instead of a hot stream of air issuingout of the vent, a cold stream was descendinginto it. Another interesting fact is that at the footof Pentedactylon there rises a stream ofwarm water, and probably it owes its heat tothe same cause as this stream of hot air. The stream which so bountifully suppliesKythraea is said by the natives to comeunder the bed of the sea from the TaurusRange on the opposite coast of Asia Minor.This theory is, of course, ridiculous, but itsuits the character of the
