BM ref. 2012 T37 Report to HM Coroner This report will consider these coins with respect to the criteria laid down in the Treasure Act (1996): Namely, their age, precious metal content and whether the coins can be said to come from the same find. Circumstances of discovery Thirty-nine coins were found in 2005 by [name removed], using a metal detector, over an area of about 250 yards. The find was brought to the Finds Liaison Officer in January 2012 and to the British Museum for identification in March 2012. A hoard of 88 radiates to AD 274 was found by [names removed] in December 2008 (2009 T12) within the same six-figure grid reference. Description of find The group contains 39 copper alloy coins of the denomination known as radiates, (originally a silver multiple of the denarius, but gradually becoming debased to the eventual point of being essentially bronze (c.1% silver)). The coins found range in date from AD 251 to 274; 7 are from the Central Empire and 19 are from the breakaway Gallic Empire. The remainder were in poor condition and could not be fully identified but have the appearance of coins of this date range. Summary by reign: Central Empire Volusian (AD 251-3) 1 Valerian & Gallienus (AD 253-60) Saloninus 1 Gallienus & Salonina (AD 260-8) Gallienus 1 Gallienus (joint or sole reign) Gallienus 1 Salonina 1 Claudius II (AD 268-70) 1 Quintillus (AD 270) 1 Gallic Empire Postumus (AD 260-9) 2 Victorinus (AD 269-71) 7 Tetricus I (AD 271-4) 6 Tetricus II 2 Uncertain Gallic Emperor 2 Uncertain emperor 9 Irregular (ancient forgeries) 4 Total 39 Of the same find? The date range and emperors represented in this group of coins is fairly typical for the content of a hoard of radiates deposited around AD 274. Furthermore, the profile of this group of coins is almost identical to the hoard of 88 coins found in the same place in 2008 and they should therefore be considered as addenda to it (2009 T12). Conclusion On the balance of probabilities, therefore, I conclude that these coins belong together as a hoard and constitute a prima facie case of treasure by being bronze coins of an antiquity greater than 300 years and of one find of more than ten pieces.
