ys tattooing appears tohave been a reward of the successful head-hunter. Sailors and some other classes stilltattoo, especially on the arms, to some extent. Tauchnitz, tovvHnits, Christian Bernhard, Freiherr von, German publisher: b. Schlei-nitz, near Naumburg, 25 Aug. 1816; d. 13 Aug.1895. In 1837 he founded his well-known pub-lishing establishment in Leipsic; in i860 wascreated a hereditary noble; in 1866 was ap-pointed consul-general for Great Britain in thekingdom of Saxony; and in 1877 was made alife member of the Saxon first chamber. Thefirm is best known for its Collection of Britishand American Authors, generally called th«Tauchnitz Edition, begun in 1841, and in 190Jextending to about 3,700 volumes.
