The virus binds to the surface of the alga and opens a portal to release the viral DNA and associated proteins; the viral DNA moves to the nucleus where early gene transcription begins at 5 to 10 min p.i. Early mRNAs move to the cytoplasm for translation, and at least some early proteins presumably return to the viral genome located at or near to the nucleus to initiate viral DNA replication, which begins ~60 p.i., followed by late gene transcription. Late mRNAs move to the cytoplasm for translation and many of these late proteins are targeted to the virus assembly centers, where virus capsids are formed and DNA is packaged. Mature infectious virus particlles appear in the cytoplasm of the cell ~45 min prior to virus release.
