Mary Ann Casey was the daughter of a successful barber. In 1871, she married Anderson Ruffin Abbott, Toronto’s first black doctor. They moved to Chatham, Ontario, where Abbott, continued to practice medicine and became associate editor of The Messenger, published by the British Methodist Episcopal Church. This picture comes from the manuscript collection of Anderson Ruffin Abbott papers, held in the [#//www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/books-video-music/specialized-collections/ Special Collections] of the Toronto Public Library.
