It was NEVER "Toodle Oo" (a way of saying goodbye) It was Toddle-O (a certain way of walking by what, today you might call cool Dudes) and the music on the original Duke Ellington rcording reflects just that.

My source is the record notes on Leonard Feather's Jazz 20's LP of which I can provide a copy.

I might add that from an authorative Point of view you cabn neither argue with Mr Feather, nor my friend, Dick Hyman who (with some disdain) accepts my POV.
