Die United States Navy produziert wie jede Organisation ihre eigenen Akronyme und Abkürzungen, die oft über ihre bloßen Erweiterungen hinaus Bedeutung haben. Diese als „NAVSpeak“ bezeichneten Begriffe gehen auf die Anfänge der Seefahrt und der Seekriegsführung zurück, als Seeleute ihr eigenes Vokabular entwickelten, um Informationen effizient zu übermitteln und die Disziplin an Bord von Schiffen aufrechtzuerhalten.
