Tom L. Humphries

Tom L. Humphries (* 1946) ist ein amerikanischer Wissenschaftler, Autor und Dozent für Gehörlosenkultur und Gehörlosenkommunikation. Humphries ist Professor an der University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Frühe Lebensjahre

Humphries prägte den Begriff Audismus 1975 und erwähnte den Begriff erneut in seiner Doktorarbeit PDE (Project Demonstrating Excellence) 1977. Er erhielt 1977 auch seinen Ph.D. in interkultureller Kommunikation und Spracherwerb von der Union Institute & University.

Karriere

Humphries ist außerordentlicher Professor im Department of Communication an der San Diego branch of the University of California.

Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der UCSD entwickelte er einen experimentellen Lehrplan für die Ausbildung gehörloser Kinder durch die Anwendung zweisprachiger Lehrmethoden.

An der Rochester School for the Deaf sagte er zu den 2010 Lyons Lecture:

"The processes of deaf identity construction are not unique phenomena but echo the experience of other embedded cultural groups, particularly those that are stressed by the assertion of hegemony over them by others. Theorists Jose Marti and W.E.B. Du Bois, who struggled with similar issues, offer us ways to think about the complicated discourses of Deaf culture and the local social histories in which Deaf culture is constructed."
