Extension to which languages ?

At itwiki we have a statistic: [1] so because we can not read italiano, we only see http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Geobox_coordinate with 49398 usages for really interesting, unfourtunally this looks old, not linked to geohack and so not proved. This was the reason for not reading itwiki. Now we could also read Template:Geobox_coordinate_comuni, but will this give us enough new informations in relation to the work? Commons images layer

Could a layer be made out of Commons images in the style Google Earth is doing with Panoramio images? There are now thousands of files in Commons:Category:Media with locations, tagged with the usual templates. --Para 16:17, 17. Mär. 2007 (CET)

You probably mean Commons:Commons:Geocoding, featuring Dschwen's WikiMiniAtlas? As great an example as it is of a project built from scratch using free material, I prefer the Google Earth interface. I think all images deserve to be plotted. With Google Earth, the program takes care of busy areas and doesn't show everything from further away. The criteria for which images are shown at first seems to be rather random though. If it can be controlled and if it's really necessary, Commons images could be ranked by things like inclusion in Commons:Category:Featured pictures, Commons:Category:Quality Images, Commons:Category:Pictures of the day, by having been chosen in a Commons gallery, or maybe even by date of upload. Would it be possible to make a quick and simple kml from the dumps to see how much ranking is needed?

Handling images shouldn't be a problem: they can be plotted as icons such as , and the description can link to the images inline using thumb.php. Credit and license could be mentioned in the description if we choose to parse that from the data as well, or the page could be thought of as just another Wikimedia project, where credit and license can be seen by clicking on the image. --Para 21:28, 17. I get a mistake. So I think I must encrypt the path to the thumb-file and thats not so easy. You can try your luck and take the SQL-file from this project, there we also save the name of the first image in each article. So I also what a solution in the past but without luke.... I parsed the commons dump myself and made a quick KML from the decimal coordinates: commons-20070224-geoloc-dec.kmz. It seems to work alright, though there are many maps which I doubt many people are interested of, plus I didn't bother converting the other coordinate types. To make this useful for photo traveling, we'd have to split them in folders based on some categories. Have to talk to Dschwen about that then.

There seems to indeed be a problem with using the & character in KML files; I tried to replace it with different entities but nothing worked. That's not a problem in the descriptions however, since they are just HTML.

If we can make this work, it's probably best to make the feeds on the toolserver, since then the filepath of the files can be found from the toolserver database and we won't need thumb.php anymore. --Para 13:26, 18. Mär. 2007 (CET)

It looks nice. I hope you have more time from experiments than I in the moment. I think the problem is not so the "&" its more the "*.php" so I believe Google Earth see this and think that it couldn't be a picture (security risk). For more than 10.000 entries I believe, it's better to use database and networklinks, should I send you some source-code of my Networklink-solution? Than you should send me a short E-Mail. I just parsed the rest of the templates using Geohack, and there's only about 3000 placemarks in the last Commons dump (commons-20070224-geoloc.kmz). But when tagging gets popular, there will no doubt be much more than there are geocoded Wikipedia articles. I can start looking at the dynamic version, alright. The category separation especially is intriguing; I was browsing the images through Google Earth and there are some that in my opinion should not by tagged, but you never know, there's always someone who wants to see them there. --Para 23:01, 18. Co-ordinate templates

Lists of coordinate templates in each wiki is available from en:Category:Coordinates templates and its interwiki links. The supported and recommended ones are mentioned in geographical coordinate project pages or style manuals.

Databases for services outside Wikipedia are updated using the database dumps at http://download.wikimedia.org/, which are updated every few months. The services update their data from those when they notice a new dump available and parse it into their systems. With Google Earth for example, the previous update was in January-Februray this year, according to tests on the English Wikipedia. Google themselves say it's one to three months. --Para 15:41, 24. Icons/Colors/Font size

It is not better if we have different colors and placemarks for different sectors? I mean, landmarks have still the same color (orange) and icon (flag) also if they are taken from different sectors (military, cave...). I suggest to differentiate them more (ie. military landmarks could have swords or similar).

I know that we can better in this part of the work, but we are a little bit dependent from the google earth icons, which are more useful for commercial usage (no swords). Free icons are rare. The articles are filtered according to the articles length, this is neccessary because 2 reasons: in english it is difficult to extract good populations values and it is difficult to decide what's a important landmark, for instance a airport or a church? So the base of the used method is, that about a important thing the people write more than about unimportant thing and it is easy because I have only look at one value with is easy to extract. Another one could be the linked pages to the article, I think. In this way things like Germany will probably be more important than Berlin. Update from French Wikipedia

Hallo,

On the French Wikipedia, we have recently re-worked the coordinate system by using a new unified template, fr:Template:Coord. It is now used on more than 50000 articles, and a few thousand articles still use the old templates, which are being replaced.

I'm wondering if this has any effect on Wikipedia-World ? Currently the box on top-right says only 894 articles are being indexed on the French Wikipedia or 67768 "with duplicates" (what does it mean ?). I would be interested to know if this has changed. Postcodes / Zip Codes

I notice that many locations on wikipedia include postcodes or zip codes. Though these vary in approach. For instance, articles for Australian and US locations use the full codes, while UK locations use the area parts of the postcode which link to other wiki pages detailing the members of that area part, so this request may not be that feasible for all instances. But as geocodes for postcodes are sought after data, would it be possible to include postcodes that a location is within in the sql output file, assuming that the data is available? Let choose the icons

The first problem I see that we have not saved the diferent underground lines in the database. What to do with station with more than one line? Updates to the sql dump files?

I apologize if I'm not doing this correctly, I only speak english but I can't seem to edit this page on a non-german wikipedia site =]

I was wondering if the data for the sql database is regularly updated and if so, are the dump files available on the article page also updated regularly?

Secondly, I see there are a lot of KMZ files available, however, there doesn't seem to be a way to simply query for articles near a given lat/long and recieve a geo-rss feed of results (say the closest 25). Does anyone know of something like this that is publicly available? If not, im considering working on it as a project which is why I was wondering if there the database is regularly updated.

Sorry for the late answer. Yes the SQL dump is also updating regularly. For a simple output you can look at umkreis.php -table. Template:GeoGroupTemplate

I am trying to use the en:Template:GeoGroupTemplate and it works just fine on the article page with the coordinate listing. I asked a query on the talk page about using the list on one article, and the maps on a different article, and was replied to but I don't understand still. Usage of geogroup template on one page, listing on separate page The article North Sea is very long. I would like a geographical features map on the page using coordinates so the places are rather precise on the map of the North Sea, so the coordinates are all listed at Geography of the North Sea and the geogroup template there is awesome. Suggestion for a new tool: Misplaced coordinates spotter

Thanks to the interwiki links, this tool would take the coordinates of an object as described on several wikipedias, calculate the center of mass, and compare each point to check whether it is completely out (more than X kilometers from the center of mass).

100 kilometers might be a good value for X. One may argue that for instance Brazil is such a large object that 100 kilometers is not enough. Let's say there are 1000 such large objects, and now compare with the 100000 or so geolocalized objects: that's 0.1% of all. I bet the proportion of false positives will be low. Does not matter much anyway because the potentially misplaced articles will be checked and fixed by humans.

Search problem

Any idea why the search tool doesn't work for a search for 'Bristol'? Its coordinates are in place. I just want Bristol, the city, and with the exact page name as I typed, to be at the top of the list.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. I can see lots of locations in the SQL dump files.

Google Maps Wikipedia masking

I don't understand this. Does it mean that we can somehow see geocordinates from non-en wikis (ex de or pl) on Google Maps? If so, how? Licence of OpenStreetMap

Hi,

Rendering of objects on toolserver's version of OpenStreetMap

One more thing: on OpenStreetMap hosted on toolserver are some important things missing. A lot of landuse=forest is missing (for instance here - but are present on "normal" OSM) as well as some other elements, which are on the map for a very long time (= there is no problem with fresh data). Can somebody have a look?

Procedure for adding more wikipedias as sources

There are more wikipedias than the ones listed as sources here. Some of these have will have templates with coordinates as well. What procedure is in place to add the information in these wikipedias? Adding articles to the map

How do articles get added to the map. I'm working on iswiki. There are lots of articles that show up on the map even though it doesn't have any GPS coordinates in the articles.
