Eisner Award

Auszeichnung für Comic-Schaffende

Der Eisner-Award (auch Will Eisner Comic Industry Award) ist eine der wichtigsten amerikanischen Auszeichnungen für Comic-Schaffende. Der Namensgeber des Preises, Will Eisner, war bis zu seinem Tod 2005 regelmäßiger Teilnehmer an der Zeremonie.

Der Vorgänger der Eisner-Awards waren die von 1985 bis 1987 vergebenen Kirby Awards. Die Kirby-Awards wurden gesponsert vom Amazing Heroes Magazin und organisiert von Dave Olbrich. 1987 kam es zum Streit zwischen Olbrich und Fantagraphics (die Firma, die Amazing Heroes herausgab), da beide Eigentümerschaft an den Kirby Awards beanspruchten. Schließlich wurde ein Kompromiss erzielt: Ab 1988 wurden die Kirby Awards nicht mehr weitergeführt und stattdessen zwei neue Auszeichnungen eingeführt; Olbrich begann mit der Verleihung der Eisner Awards und Fantagraphics verliehen fortan die Harvey Awards.

Jedes Jahr reichen Verlage und Comic-Schaffende ihre Vorschläge für die Awards ein. Die fünfköpfige Jury, ernannt von den Organisatoren der Comicmesse in San Diego, nominiert daraus fünf Kandidaten für jede der Preis-Kategorien. Die Vorschläge werden dann in Form eines Stimmzettels an Mitarbeiter und Fachleute der Comicbranche versandt. Die Verkündung der Abstimmungsergebnisse und die Verleihung der Preise wird jährlich (außer 1990) auf der Comicmesse Comic-Con International in San Diego, Kalifornien abgehalten.

Im Rahmen dieser Zeremonie werden auch weitere Preise verliehen:

  • Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, benannt nach Bob Clampett, einem beliebten Trickfilmzeichner, Cartoonisten und Regisseur.
  • Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award. Die Auszeichnung wird seit 1982 für herausragende Leistungen vergeben. Sie ist nach Russ Manning benannt, dem Zeichner der Tarzan und Star Wars Zeitungs-Strips.
  • Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing. Benannt nach dem Co-Schöpfer Batmans wird dieser Preis jedes Jahr für herausragende Leistungen an einen lebenden und einen verstorbenen Empfänger vergeben.
  • Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award wird dem besten Comic-Laden verliehen.
  • Comic-Con Icon Award wird der Person oder Organisation verliehen, die am meisten für die Verbreitung von Comics getan hat.
  • Comic-Con International’s Inkpot Award wird seit 1974 für herausragende Leistungen vergeben.
