Dies ist eine willkürliche Auswahl bekannter Rocksongs. In die Liste aufgenommene Rockbands bzw. Rockmusiker sollten mit ihrem jeweils bekanntesten Song bzw. Instrumentaltitel erscheinen. Nur in Ausnahmefällen sollte eine Band oder ein Solokünstler mit mehreren Stücken vertreten sein.
Die Liste beginnt mit dem Jahr 1964, hat aber auch einen Abschnitt für die Jahre davor. Innerhalb jedes Jahres sind die Songs alphabetisch angeordnet.
Der Begriff Rockmusik wird hier in einem weiteren Sinn verstanden, d. h. es werden auch Songs aufgeführt, die auf den ersten Blick nicht unter Rockmusik eingestuft würden, die jedoch für die Entwicklung der Rockmusik von Bedeutung waren.
